Collision damage waivers and rental insurance are conditional: the driver must hold a licence that's valid for driving in that jurisdiction. Where local law requires an International Driving Permit alongside your foreign licence, driving without one can put you outside that condition. The US State Department explicitly advises checking whether your destination requires an IDP before you drive, precisely because the legal status of your licence flows through to everything else — police stops, rentals and insurance.

How claims actually get denied

The recurring pattern in consumer complaint records is not the rental pickup — desks sometimes hand over keys without checking — it's the aftermath of an accident. When a claim is filed, the insurer or rental company reviews whether the driver was legally entitled to drive; a missing required IDP gives them a contractual reason to refuse the damage waiver or the travel-insurance payout, leaving the renter personally liable for repairs or third-party costs. The permit that costs about US$20 at home can be the difference on a four- or five-figure claim.

Where readability matters too

Even in countries that don't mandate an IDP, an unreadable licence — non-Latin script, or categories the assessor can't parse — slows claims and roadside checks because officials can't verify what you're licensed to drive. That's the honest role of a certified translation companion: it makes your licence legible to police, rental staff and claims handlers. It does not replace an IDP where one is legally required — only authorised issuers in your home country provide those.
