🇰🇪 Do you need an IDP to drive in Kenya?
IDP recommended· 1968 Vienna Convention· Last reviewed 17 Jun 2026
Short answer
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended for driving in Kenya, even where it is not always strictly enforced. Carry it alongside your original national licence.
Driving in Kenya: the rule explained
Kenya is a 1968 Vienna Convention country regulated by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). A foreign licence in English is generally accepted for short visits of up to 90 days, so a tourist on a short stay can often drive on the home licence alone. The UK FCDO notes that beyond 3 months a 1968 IDP plus the home licence is required, and a non-English licence should be backed by an IDP or certified translation from arrival.
Exemption: Holders of an English-language foreign licence may drive for short tourist stays (up to ~90 days) without an IDP.
Renting a car in Kenya
Rental firms accept an English-language foreign licence for short hires; carry a 1968 IDP or certified translation if your licence is not in English.
Motorcycles & scooters: The same foreign-licence/IDP rules apply to motorcycle hire, subject to the relevant licence category.
