Your US license just works

The US and Canada accept each other's driver's licenses, so as a visitor you can drive across Canada on your valid US license for the length of your authorized stay. An IDP is not needed — your license is already in English. We will be straight with you: for a Canada trip, most US drivers do not need to buy any additional driving document at all.

What to actually carry

Bring your physical US license, proof of valid auto insurance, and your vehicle registration if you are bringing your own car. Rental companies accept a US license directly. Watch for province-specific rules — metric speed limits, winter-tire requirements in places like Quebec and parts of British Columbia, and standard seatbelt and distracted-driving laws.

Where a WDP translation companion fits

For Canada specifically, a World Driving Permit translation adds essentially nothing, because your English license is fully recognized. Its only realistic use is if your trip continues into countries that do require translations or IDPs. It is a comprehension aid, never a legal requirement here, and it does not replace your US license.
