🇪🇹 Do you need an IDP to drive in Ethiopia?
Depends on your licence· no specific convention· Last reviewed 17 Jun 2026
Short answer
It depends on the country that issued your licence — Ethiopia accepts some foreign licences directly while others require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Confirm the rule for your specific licence before you travel.
Driving in Ethiopia: the rule explained
Ethiopia is not a party to the 1949 or 1968 conventions and does not recognise the IDP as a standalone driving document. UK FCDO advises that a foreign licence is only valid very briefly (about 2 weeks for a UK licence; visitors are otherwise generally limited to around 3 months), after which a local Ethiopian licence must be obtained. In practice a foreign licence is exchanged for, or converted into, an Ethiopian permit, for which a certified copy/translation of the foreign licence is required.
Exemption: No IDP exemption — Ethiopia requires conversion to a local Ethiopian permit beyond a short initial window.
Renting a car in Ethiopia
Self-drive rental is uncommon; most visitors hire a car with a local driver. Driving yourself realistically requires obtaining a temporary or converted Ethiopian permit.
Motorcycles & scooters: A locally recognised Ethiopian permit is likewise needed to ride a motorcycle beyond the short initial period.
