🇬🇹 Do you need an IDP to drive in Guatemala?
IDP recommended· 1949 Geneva Convention· Last reviewed 18 Jun 2026
Short answer
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended for driving in Guatemala, even where it is not always strictly enforced. Carry it alongside your original national licence.
Driving in Guatemala: the rule explained
Foreign tourists may drive on a valid home-country licence for the first 30 days; an IDP is required for stays beyond that period. Guatemala is a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention and recognises the IDP issued under it. Because police and rental staff operate in Spanish, an IDP or certified Spanish translation is strongly advised when the home licence is not in Spanish or uses non-Roman script.
Exemption: No specific countries are exempted by name; the 30-day allowance applies broadly to valid foreign licences, after which an IDP is required.
Renting a car in Guatemala
Rental companies require a passport and valid foreign licence, and many request or require an IDP as a supplement — especially if the licence is not in Spanish; a credit card in the renter's name is typically mandatory.
Motorcycles & scooters: A motorcycle entitlement on the home licence (with matching IDP category) is expected, and helmet use is legally required.
