Why 'near me' searches point to the wrong door

'International driver's license' is a marketing phrase; no government defines or issues one. What exists is the International Driving Permit — a booklet that translates your existing licence — and the law says only a body authorised by your own government can issue it. That is why the DMV, your embassy abroad and the licensing office of the country you are visiting will all turn you away: the IDP is issued at home, before you travel, by a motoring association or its agent. United States: find a AAA branch or apply through AATA

The State Department authorises exactly two issuers. AAA issues IDPs at participating branches — use the locator on aaa.com, then walk in with your valid US licence, two identical 2"×2" passport photos signed on the back and the US$20 fee; you must be 18 or older and the permit is valid for one year from an effective date you can set up to six months ahead. AAA also accepts applications by mail at its Heathrow, Florida office. AATA takes applications online and mails the physical permit, typically 10–15 business days of processing plus postage. Neither hands over a digital file.

United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the UAE

UK photocard licence holders buy the IDP over the counter at shops that offer PayPoint for £5.50 with a passport photo (the Post Office stopped issuing in 2024) — check GOV.UK first, because many destinations, including Italy and Spain, do not require UK visitors to hold one. In Canada the CAA club for your province issues IDPs at its offices for about CAD 32. In Australia the state and territory motoring clubs linked by the Australian Automobile Association issue them for about AUD 49, some with online application and postal delivery. In the UAE, the Automobile and Touring Club and RTA channels issue them for about AED 170 with your Emirates ID and licence.

What you can legitimately do online

You can start an official application online — AATA's form, some AAA regions, several Australian clubs — but the permit that arrives is a printed booklet by post. No authorised issuer sells an instant digital IDP, and the US FTC and USAGov both warn that sites promising one are fraudulent.
