🇳🇦 Do you need an IDP to drive in Namibia?
IDP usually not required· 1949 Geneva Convention· Last reviewed 18 Jun 2026
Short answer
Usually not — most visitors can drive in Namibia on a valid national driving licence during a short tourist stay. A certified translation can still make police and rental checks smoother, especially for non-Latin-script licences.
Driving in Namibia: the rule explained
Namibia drives on the LEFT and accepts a valid English-language home licence (e.g. UK, US, SA) for tourist driving; the UK FCDO confirms a UK photocard licence can be used. An IDP or certified English translation is needed only if the licence is not in English, though rental firms often prefer to see one. Gravel-road and night-driving hazards are significant.
Exemption: Valid English-language licences accepted for tourists without an IDP.
Renting a car in Namibia
Rental companies accept English licences but may request an IDP for non-English ones; comprehensive cover including single-vehicle/animal accidents is advised.
Motorcycles & scooters: A motorcycle-category licence and helmet are required for two-wheelers.
