Short answer
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended for driving in Bahrain, even where it is not always strictly enforced. Carry it alongside your original national licence.
Driving in Bahrain: the rule explained
Foreign tourists without residency may drive in Bahrain on their valid home-country licence for the duration of a short visit, and the General Directorate of Traffic offers an official approval/stamping service for visitors who want their foreign licence endorsed. An IDP is not legally mandatory but is strongly recommended, especially if the home licence is not in English or Arabic. Bahrain honours the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP.
Exemption: GCC nationals/residents driving on a valid GCC member-state licence are generally accepted directly and do not need an IDP.
Renting a car in Bahrain
Rental companies typically accept a valid foreign licence for short-term hires but commonly ask to see an IDP alongside it (plus passport and entry stamp).
Motorcycles & scooters: To ride a motorcycle a tourist needs a licence with the corresponding motorcycle category (and matching IDP class).
