What Italian law actually says

Italy treats your US license as valid only when accompanied by an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, or an official certified translation. The IDP is the simplest route because it is recognized everywhere and standardized. It does not let you drive on its own — you must carry both the physical IDP and your original US license together at all times when driving.

Getting your IDP before you fly

Only AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance are authorized to issue US International Driving Permits. Apply in person or by mail before departure with your valid US license, two passport photos, and a small fee — Italy does not issue IDPs to visitors, so you cannot get one after arriving. Avoid websites selling fast online international licenses; those are not recognized and are often scams.

Where a WDP translation companion fits

Your IDP is the legal document. A World Driving Permit translation booklet and wallet card can still help at rural rental branches, hotel parking, or after a minor incident, by presenting your license categories clearly in Italian and other languages.
