🇸🇮 Do you need an IDP to drive in Slovenia?
IDP recommended· 1968 Vienna Convention· Last reviewed 17 Jun 2026
Short answer
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended for driving in Slovenia, even where it is not always strictly enforced. Carry it alongside your original national licence.
Driving in Slovenia: the rule explained
Slovenia is an EU member and a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention. Non-EU visitors may drive on a valid foreign licence for up to 12 months, but an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended and is effectively required if your licence is not in Latin script.
Exemption: Licences issued by EU and EEA/EFTA member states are fully valid in Slovenia without an IDP for the entire stay.
Renting a car in Slovenia
Most Slovenian rental desks ask non-EU drivers for an IDP alongside the home licence, and some refuse to hand over the car without one.
Motorcycles & scooters: The same IDP recommendation applies to motorcycle rentals, with the IDP showing the corresponding motorcycle category.
