🇷🇼 Do you need an IDP to drive in Rwanda?

IDP recommended· 1968 Vienna Convention· Last reviewed 18 Jun 2026

Short answer

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended for driving in Rwanda, even where it is not always strictly enforced. Carry it alongside your original national licence.

Driving in Rwanda: the rule explained

Rwanda allows visitors to drive for up to 90 days on a valid national licence (in English or French) or an IDP. An IDP is strongly recommended, and effectively needed, if your licence is in a non-Latin script (e.g. Arabic, Chinese, Russian); the 1968 model is the relevant format. Always carry your passport, licence/IDP and rental documents.

Exemption: Licences issued in English or French are accepted without an IDP for stays up to 90 days.

Renting a car in Rwanda

Rental companies require a national licence or IDP, passport, and a valid insurance certificate; requirements vary by firm.

Motorcycles & scooters: Motorcycle category must be shown on the licence and IDP; helmets are mandatory.
