Can I drive in Ireland with a US license?

Your US license is enough

Ireland lets US citizens drive on their existing US license for a temporary stay of up to one year, so you do not need an IDP. Because your license is already in English, there is nothing to translate for the authorities. Be honest with yourself about cost here: most US visitors do not need to buy any extra driving document for Ireland.

Rental, insurance, and left-side driving

Some rental companies and insurers may still ask for an IDP or impose age limits (often 25-plus), so check your booking terms. The bigger adjustment is that Ireland drives on the left with right-hand-drive cars and many narrow, winding rural roads. Turning on red is illegal, and Garda checkpoints test for drink-driving — plan accordingly.
